The Keswick Mass Trespass of 1887

On Saturday 1st October 1887 two thousand people gathered in the centre of Keswick. They tore down barriers which had been erected by the landowner and marched to the top of Latrigg in a mass trespass. They were claiming the right of ascent to the Lake District fells. The trespass resulted in a court case in Carlisle the following year. Roy Ellis' talk will explore the background to the trespass, the results of the court case and the role of Canon Rawnsley.
