The trials and tribulations of constructing an iconic railway. Based on his book ‘New railway to Scotland’ David will use the first major collection of contemporary accounts from local and national newspapers written at the time to describe the Settle to Carlisle Railway during its construction. The illustrated talk will tackle topics such as who were the engineers , contractors and navvies, how were the viaducts and tunnels constructed and what were some of the dangers and accidents that happened to the work force.
