SUMMARY:Keswick Alhambra - its history and challenges : Graham King
DESCRIPTION:KESWICK’S ALHAMBRA is one of the oldest continuously operating cinemas in the UK\, having opened its doors in January 1914. The projectors continued to roll through two world wars and showings were brought to an extended halt only by the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021. This talk covers the cinema’s long history from its earliest days through the introduction of talkies to the latest technological innovations and the Alhambra’s resurrection as a twin-screen cinema in 2021. Beyond this history\, we’ll tell you about the current challenges of running a stand-alone independent cinema in a business dominated on the distribution side by massive international companies such as Disney\, Sony and Warner and on the exhibitor side in the UK by the large multiplex chains. We will also discuss the tensions of being a much-loved small-town institution that in fact makes the vast majority of its living from visitors.  \nGraham King is the Alhambra’s current proprietor along with his partner Jonathan Moore. A 2020 transplant to Keswick from London\, his past career includes radio and television presenting\, running a TV outside broadcast company and 20 years as a barrister practising mostly in criminal law.

SUMMARY:The Mackenzie River : Nigel Rowe
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Rowe was leader of the British Mackenzie River Expedition\, a 2000km canoeing descent of the world’s tenth-longest river across Arctic Canada\, commencing from the Great Slave Lake and finishing at the remote settlement of Tuktoyaktuk in the Beaufort Sea. Six Metropolitan Police Officers on an old-fashioned adventure with paper maps and fishing rods\, they battled through storms\, canyons and fast water\, surviving bear attacks and a relentless plague of mosquitoes. Canoeing across the Arctic Circle\, they entered the myriad of channels that form the Mackenzie Delta\, a damp\, inhospitable\, bug-ridden lagoon\, before entering the Arctic Ocean to Tuktoyaktuk. This is an entertaining talk with colourful pictures of an Arctic landscape.

DESCRIPTION:This is a rare chance to catch Richard Hinchcliffe’s richly illustrated and unexpurgated talk about his father’s management of Flying Scotsman and the historic and controversial tour of the USA and Canada. Richard recently appeared extensively in the Channel 4 documentary by Brite spark films: The Secrets of Flying Scotsman. This is a talk for a wide variety of audience – not just railway enthusiasts. A non-railway enthusiast said after hearing the talk “It appears bizarre that somebody had the idea of sending the Flying Scotsman on a trip across the US with a trade exhibition to advertise British products\, from Johnny Walker whisky to Pretty Polly tights. A travel story unfolding against a back-drop of cultural and political change.”

SUMMARY:The Running Granny : Angela White
DESCRIPTION:Angela\,aka The Running Granny\, is a retired orthopaedic surgeon who started running aged 53. At the age of 60 she ran 875 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End (JOGLE) – not because running the length of Britain had ever been an ambition\, but because years on orthopaedic wards watching preventable decline had made her determined to start a conversation about healthy ageing. Overcoming extreme weather\, injury\, and a thorough reappraisal of what she believed herself capable of\, she became the oldest woman ever to complete the JOGLE and gained a Guinness World Record for doing so. What audiences tend to find is that the run turns out to be only part of the story. ‘You’re never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream’

DESCRIPTION:Andrea is the current head gardener at Lowther Castle. She’ll talk about the gardens today andwill include current development projects and new maintenance strategies for one of the unique horticultural projects of the North. Andrea is an internationally trained horticulturist who began gardening with her grandparents in Germany\, underwent a traditional German apprenticeship\, studied botanical horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew in London\, and earned an MSc in nature conservation from UCL. She combined ten years of horticultural education with internships across South Africa\, Botswana\, Israel\, and the USA. After graduation\, she led an 11-year revitalization of Inner Temple Gardens in Central London and later managed the 1\,000-acre outdoor landscapes at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. She then returned to the UK to contribute to the ongoing development of Lowther Castle & Garden\, a distinctive horticultural project in the North.

SUMMARY:Thirlmere Reservoir & Aqueduct : John Butcher
DESCRIPTION:A reservoir holding 8 billion gallons of water together with a 95 mile long aqueduct consisting of tunnels\, pipes and water courses\, transporting up to 50 million gallons of water daily between Thirlmere and Manchester. \nJohn retired from United Utilities in 2017 after a 30-year long career working with the Lake District’s regional water supply systems together with the other major aqueduct systems in the Northwest of the UK. Since then John has been a consultant helping out with major water supply projects both in the UK and overseas. However\, his favourite still to this day is the Thirlmere reservoir and aqueduct. John will share his passion for this wonder of Victorian engineering and take us through the history and building of the Thirlmere reservoir and why today it is considered to be the birth of environmentalism in the UK. He will then take us on a tour of the 95 mile-long aqueduct which delivers the waters of Thirlmere to Lancashire and Manchester under gravity alone.
