As well as his better known polar expeditions, Geoff Somers has also ventured into other wilderness areas.  In 1993, knowing nothing about camels, he and a companion Craig Hetherington, purchased three camels  captured from the Australian Outback.  Having  trained them to carry loads the motley team set out from near Perth, Australia and trekked 1,400 miles across the Great Victoria and Gibson deserts to reach, in 97 days, Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the centre of the continent.  The three month journey took them through thick ‘bush’, sand dunes and the strange world of “The Outback”.
