The German Miners in Elizabethan Keswick : Mark Hatton

In 1564 a colony of miners & metallurgists arrived in Keswick from Germany. They brought advanced technologies and innovative business models and were supported by new legal structures. Their arrival in Keswick sparked a baby boom and led to violence, which culminated in murder. This talk considers whether their arrival marks a watershed in the industrial and commercial development of the British Isles and asks “Is Keswick the birthplace of capitalism, advanced technology, process industries and company law in Britain?”
